If you’re suffering from back pains, then yoga might be a wonderful antidote for you. When most people think of yoga, they think of releasing stress and tension, being more flexible, balanced and relaxed but few people would think of using yoga for pain relief.
Not only does yoga help to reduce back pain and maintain a healthy spine, but the poses used during yoga will also stretch and strengthen your back muscles. When your back muscles are well-conditioned, you’ll find that your back pains will be greatly reduced! You can do this by practising gentle yoga poses at first. As you hold a pose, you’ll feel certain muscles relax while others stretch, and this helps with relaxation and flexibility.
Here at Pranasanti Yoga, we incorporate yoga in our daily schedules for all-day tours and retreat guests. If you’re reading this at home and would like to try eliminating back pain with yoga and do not have had much experience before, why not try some simple stretching exercises first until you feel comfortable. Those familiar with yoga poses can try the Child’s Pose or the Cobra Pose to bring relief to a sore back.
Stretching brings with it plenty of benefits including reducing tension in the spine while improving overall mobility. Try simple sitting stretches that you can do at your desk if you work in an office such as the Hamstring Reach, Lower Spine Stretch and the Long Spinal Stretch, all from the comforts of your chair. Hold each stretch for 15-20 seconds and do one side of the body each time. Do remember to be especially cautious if you’re suffering from any injury or overly chronic pains.
Once you feel more comfortable, you can start on the more complex yoga poses and see the difference for yourself.
Here at Pranasanti, yoga is included in all of our daily schedules and all retreat participants are encouraged to join. Yoga is a combination of the spiritual and the physical and comes with a host of positive benefits including increased core strength and flexibility, help you towards achieving a healthier weight, increase muscle tone, endurance and agility, improve balance, blood circulation, posture and possibly even stronger bones.
